Muharram (المحرّم)

  • Meaning: Muharram means “forbidden” or “sacred.” It is considered one of the holiest months in Islam.
  • Purpose: Muharram is a month of reflection, fasting, and remembrance. It’s a time to start the Islamic year with a fresh and pious beginning.
  • Special Events: The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is the most significant. It marks the day when Prophet Moses and the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh’s tyranny. For Shia Muslims, it is a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.
